Bayside Hockey Club
The idea of forming Bayside Hockey Club arose when three players were training at Seaford for the Victorian over 35’s State Veteran’s team during 1987. After much discussion, a team was entered at the beginning of the 1988 winter season, recruiting only players who were aged over 35. The uniform consisted of a navy skirt, white socks and white shirt with the logo of a girl drinking champagne. One rule from the start was that it was compulsory to have a drink and a chat at the end of the match each week.
Apart from the logo, this tradition continues today.
After a couple of years, the age restriction was lifted and all were welcomed when Bayside merged with the Karingal High School team in 1990. Bayside was successfully represented in both A and B grades while the competition was still played on grass, with many players chosen to represent the association at Country Week. A very enjoyable ‘20 Year Reunion ’was held in 2008 for past and current players.
The Peninsula Womens’ Hockey Association competition moved to the new turf ground at the Frankston campus of Monash University in 2002 where the competition is played on Monday nights instead of Saturday afternoons.
Bayside have not only been successful socially, we have played in many finals series, resulting in premierships in:
A Grade: 1994, 1996, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015 & 2017.
B Grade: 1994, 2000.
Bayside continues to be a social team that enjoys and plays winning hockey.
